A Watch Story

Forgetting your cell phone is the most annoying experience! It becomes an eye opener to your overdependence on that one piece of equipment. It contains all your phone numbers (who memorizes those anymore), is the only on the go way to verbally communicate (germ infested public phones are a No No!) and what better way to ignore overtures or just annoying people in general. Not to mention, you can’t tell the time so you are continuously aggravated with thoughts of being late even when you have nowhere to be, you can’t text or call anyone and you just feel out of the loop.

When I forgot my phone at the hotel during a recent trip out of town, I finally realized after a frustrating day of feeling discombobulated that it was time to start wearing a watch again. Why? I just thought I would have been less paranoid if I was just able to tell time when I got the whim. And loosing the phone made me pay attention to watches so I began to realize it was a shame I did not wear one. And when I thought WWOD (what would Oprah do) I realize that she would wear one and that was it for me.

Personally I think the cell phone is the proverbial video that killed the radio star i.e. the watch. Watch sales have never been the same since cell phones arrived as the cool accessory on the scene. Look at what happened to pay phones. Either way my growing dependence on my cell phone made having a watch less and less important. Back in the day, I used to be a watch lover. I remember getting a Mickey Mouse watch with a black leather band for my ninth birthday. That was my grown up moment and the only thing I wore on my wrist. Throughout the years I have always kept a watch nearby. After all they were a must have for standardized tests to say the least. But it has become easier to slip on a bangle or two to make a look than a watch which provided less variation in a wardrobe.

So after that disastrous weekend I felt it was time to take the plunge. I had noticed that some celebs including Oprah wearing their timepiece on their wrist and was now ever more curious. The right watch can make even the dowdiest outfit seem high end. I’ve also noticed ironically that the watch is the staple for a man in general but the appeal is lost to many women. It has not been easy finding a picture of a woman, not in politics wearing a watch, but a man is never dressed without one. For example, President Barack Obama wears a watch always however, for Michelle Obama sometimes you see it sometimes you don’t. Is it that we view watches merely as an interchangeable accessory and one of our many wrist adornment choices while men are limited in their choices so the relevance of the watch to their wardrobes is greater?

When I decided to purchase a watch, I realized it could not just be any watch. Did I want a strong timepiece or a thin and more feminine bracelet? Did I want a “don’t rock the boat” leather band or a stand out powerful metal band and face? Should I choose show off gold or earth silver? Should it be a square or round face? One thing I knew for sure was that there would be no “bling” on my timepiece. I felt like I had to place similar focus as I would for a diamond ring. I started off with the usual online mass retail sites like Overstock.com, Macys.com, and Amazon.com and soon realized that a watch held more stylistic importance than a bangle as it was seen as part of your personality like a pair of eye glasses so I had to choose well and in person.

After a lengthy (few weeks) search online I decided that it had to be a Fossil gold-toned square metal face and band with a least 35 mm face. I came close many times to purchasing my fav online but hesitated since there were too many question marks in my mind. So, on a recent trip to the Fossil store I finally found the watch I knew only by a number and brief description. In person the oversized look was “a don’t” as it swallowed my wrist. I was not impressed and felt like trying on the watch was like deciding to go back to wearing glasses but realizing at the last minute that my contacts make me look better in pictures. The look just seemed out of place probably because the relevance was deemed since I now was careful to not forget my cell phone. Maybe next time…

Lipstick Jungle Episode 9 Inspired Look

Hi Darlings:

In Episode 9, I really enjoyed seeing Victory's and Dahlia's earrings. They were gold, delicate and in the shape of a leaf or flowers. Just a simple statement that worked well with pulled back hair when the blooming flower version is worn or with the hair down when the leaf is chosen. I found a few budget conscious options that work equally well. Here is what I found:

1.) Gold Polished Orbit Dropped Earrings: Overstock at $62.99

2.) Kipepeo Gold Leaf Earrings: Fashion Bliss at $37.00

3.) Dagger Metal Earrings: Forever 21 at $4.80

Lipstick Jungle Episode 5 Inspired Look

Hi Darlings:
This weeks episode focused on beautiful stand out rings and although the outfits were - just - okay, the coupling of the trench dress and large, colorful belt was inspiring.

When I saw the rings I thought of my favorite places to purchase cocktail rings, if I were not designing them myself. Cecile et Jeanne came to mind and it has been my favorite albeit favorite window shopping place for years. The cocktail ring designs are darling and simply divine. Their collections are never same and have a starting price of over $100. (See first two pics)
I also like Diva in Annapolis which offers many wonderful options. And of course Nido's in Georgetown. And Swarovski at the Pentagon City Fashion Centre Mall with prices that start as low as $80. Hugs and besos.

Headbands: The Fad Only a Celeb Can Love

Hi Darlings:

Throughout the years there have been many accessory fads that have started in Hollywood and made it to the mainstream but there are equally many that seem to not catch on with the "everyday" gal. More recently, gladiator shoes, for example, have been the accessory du jour. Granted they might have started with Balenciaga but they've become more popular as celebrities such as Nicole Richie, Mary Kate Olsen, and Gwyneth Paltrow are seen wearing them on and off the red carpet.

The over-sized sunglasses look made a comeback via Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen and homage to Jackie O and now even middle end brand stores like Express and H&M carry the look. Even I have a pair now.
However, the headband or scarf on the forehead tied behind the head look is just a hippie inspired trend that hasn't caught on.

The "every day" gal has not taken to it no matter how many celebs are photographed for People.com wearing the costumed seeming look. Thank goodness! The thought of the forehead imprint and dent in a perfectly coiffed hairstyle is just too much to bare.

I think we "every day" gals prefer the ordinary look when it comes to scarves, so we are sticking to using them as the traditional necktie, triangular head tie, as a belt or even to adorn our purses. Somebody should mention this to Aubrey O'Day of Danity Kane...she now designs these headbands for sale on her Heart on my Sleeve website to the "every day" gal.

Hugs.

NY Fashion Week - Fall 2008 recap

Hi Darlings:

Why did it take me 3 hours to get home last night when it normally takes about 30 minutes? Not fun indeed! I was having fun at first listening to the radio but once I began to notice that the same songs repeated every 10 minutes or so I was not so delighted. Thank goodness for good friends and a telephone charger! Wouldn’t you know it the problem turned out to be an accident and once I got past "the spot" the rest of my trip took only 15 mins. Thankfully I made it home safe and sound! I won't even go there by saying DC metro residents cannot drive in bad weather...but I guess I just did.

Well after my one day break I fear I have to play catch up and discuss the Grammys and NY Fashion Week...especially since we are already on to London Fashion Week. Ye gads!

But, before I move on I would love to announce that Marilyn Blevins of North Carolina is the winner of the lovely bouquet from Jume’s Flowers. Congratulations Marilyn!!!

Stay tuned in the future for more giveaways...

The NY Times talks about everything from Marc Jacobs to Madonna when it comes to the Fall 2008 Mercedes Benz NY Fashion Week. Despite the restrictive look in some collections overall it seems like the fashion houses have stuck to the same themes we noticed in the Spring 08 shows - there are still bold prints and body shaping looks. We are also seeing light layers of fabrics and thankfully less pastels and citrus colors. Instead those are replaced with more Fall appropriate pallets.

Donna Karan did not disappoint. Her looks were flowly and shapely without hugging the body too close.

Maria Cornejos kept her look and colors really bold and not too pastel.
Mara Hoffman kept with the bold prints.
Vera Wang as usual was simple chic except the jewelry that went with her collection were bolder than ever.
Hmmm...what would I like in my wardrobe just because...

BCBG MaxAzria: This dress is playful, fun and young.
Bill Blass: This suit and hat look simple, chic look for evening. The suit is well tailored without seeming heavy and overdone.
Carlos Miele: That sweater alone can bring out the diva in anyone! Loves it.
Dennis Basso: Dramatic dress without being overly so.
Tadashi Shoji: I love this dress because it is simple and seems versatile. I almost feel that its a look you can wear to work, a date or just meeting friends for dinner or it can even work at a cocktail party.

How fun!!

Quick Tip ... Super Tuesday Jitters!

Ok Darlings:
I promise not to take the side of any candidate on the blog but I have to admit that I am engrossed in the Super Tuesday mayhem as I type. So, I am so sorry that this post is so short.
One thing that has caught my eyes today besides the colors on the CNN maps was the purse in this picture. Isn't it delish!

Asos.com - Chic on the Cheap

Hi Darlings:

You should take a look at Asos.com - "the online fashion store". We have to start looking towards warmer weather ... not because tomorrow it will be a surprising 67 degrees in DC but also because Spring IS around the corner! The shoes at Asos are cute, chic and affordable. Although the prices are listed in British pounds (I think 2 to 1 conversion...yikes!) you can clearly tell that the currency conversion will not make your heart skip a beat...here are a few samplings. Happy shopping!

Laced front Mary Jane pointed shoe - £30.00

Tbar Patent Wedge - £30.00

Leather Tbar front flat shoe - £30.00

Hat Attack over accessories

Hi Darlings:

I was at the hair salon on Friday pm when I saw the cutest belt in one of the fashion mags. As per usual, I made a written note to look up the line - Buji Baja by Hat Attack. I was fascinated because the belt in the mag was a dear and under $60 well within our budget fashionista purchase limit. Not sure if you've heard of Hat Attack but on their website they have the cutest hats and accessories. Most are within budget while others might cost a few extra pennies here and there. :) If you get a moment take a look at these two items:

The Buji Baja Luxe rope belt with gold hardware for $92... and The Buji Baja Raffia crocheted clutch with leather trim for $88. Hugs and besos.
