Hi All:

I would like to introduce you to Henrieta Dzurikaninova a local Washingtonian who has just started her own line of fragrances Fabulous Incorporated.

Hugs.

1.) Why fragrances? Many women like fragrances but few think of making their own. Have you always liked perfumes and scents?
I always loved fragrances and cosmetics, in general since very young age. My father always laughs at me that I loved to be pampered since the day I was born. [For many years], I have been thinking about launching my own perfume line, so it was just a dream [for many years].
2.) How did the concept for the fragrance come about?
Beginning last June, I was working as a stylist on a movie and I visited Bloomingdale's in New York. As I was walking around I got lost and I ended up in the fragrance section, and I was asked by a woman if I would like to create my perfume. I looked at her so surprised, like she can read my mind. I said yes [I would], but I have to study first and I'm planning to go to France to take classes. She said I don't need any of that and asked me what I liked. Without thinking, I mentioned flowers [because] I love the smell. They blended what I told them and went bananas... Saying things like OMG this is so wonderful, sexy and different, we never smelled anything like that...I watched them to make [the scent]. I came home and started to do the research. Finally, after 2 months I decided to order oils and bottles.
One morning after really hard day at work I woke up with this crazy energy that I have to mix a perfume. I started to mix, I came out with packaging and by the evening I had three perfumes!
3.) How long does it typically take to make one scent? Where do you make them?
Every perfume I mix myself at home, I write the name on it by hand and I tie the bow myself. It's very personal and every bottle gets my attention and is handmade by me. All three perfumes are 100% Pure Oils, no alcohol or dilutants are added. Bottles don't have pump, so they are environmentally friendly. They are 1 oz for $50.

4.) Why did you want to have a fragrance and is this the start of a line of cosmetics?
I don't know if it's the start of cosmetics, but I definitely have 2 other fragrances brewing...
5.) Where are the perfumes sold?
So far [they are] been sold at Sangaree Boutique (Georgetown); Green and Blue Boutique(Dupont Circle) and I am working on other accounts.
6.) Do you have a website?

Diva Bugs Talks Shopping With Kristi Yamaguchi

Hi Darlings:

Here is the second part of the interview with Kristi Yamaguchi where we delve a little more on her thoughts about fashion. The first part of the interview was on her partnership with the American Lung Association for the Faces of Influenza project. We've often wondered about the role fashion plays in her life and now we know.

1.) How did it feel to go from figure skating to Dancing with the Stars? Was the decision based on the ability to add more accessories to your stage wear? :)

I do have to say I love crystals and sparkly costumes, although learning how to dance was my biggest draw to the show. You would think that as a figure skater I would have had it easier learning the dance moves, but it’s totally different movement in the legs. I was on Advil the entire time! But it was great learning to dance, and my partner Mark Ballas was amazing.

2.) What was your favorite DWTS costume? How did it look? Why did you like it?

It’s so hard to pick my favorite with all the great costumes there were! But I loved the first outfit I danced in – the dress was gold and covered in crystals, and I had on opera length gloves. I felt very elegant.

3.) What is your favorite online or “brick and mortar” store?
Nordstrom is great – especially because they carry shoes in a size five! Nordstrom’s and Zappos.com are the only places I can find shoes that fit me.

4.) Is there a favorite item of clothing or accessory that you could wear every day or with anything? Why? How long have you owned it?

I gravitate toward cashmere sweaters, especially in the winter. They’re comfortable but still make an outfit look put together. I have had my favorite sweater for over 10 years. They never go out of style.

5.) How has your fashion changed with becoming a mom?
I look for things that are machine-washable and require very little ironing! But I do like to keep up with the trends.

6.) What is a typical day like for you?
I don’t think there is a typical day. But when I’m home, my focus is on being a mom and spending time with my two daughters.

7.) Are you a jeans or khaki or slacks girl?
Definitely jeans – I have a pair for every occasion.

Kristi Yamaguchi has partnered with the American Lung Association for the Faces of Influenza project to bring more awareness to the regular flu and the need to make sure you and your loved ones get the flu shot.

Please take a moment to read about some great advice on why we should all get the flu shot and why Kristi is working with the American Lung Association to help spread the word.

Since Kristi is also last year's winner of Dancing With the Stars we would be remissed not to ask about her style secrets! I am sure like me you love the costumes on DWTS! Please come back by the end of the week to find out what Kristi has to say about fashion.

1.) What made you get involved with the Faces of Influenza project?

I‘ve been a strong proponent of getting a flu shot since my skating days. It helped me to stay healthy during competition, which ran right through the flu season.

I’ve been involved with the American Lung Association’s Faces of Influenza campaign for four years now. The program encourages Americans to see themselves and their loved ones among the many “faces” of influenza – people who fall into one or more groups recommended for annual vaccination by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

My doctor has always stressed the importance of annual flu vaccination to maintain my health, as an athlete. But now as a mother, I realize my whole family needs to be immunized, and that’s a responsibility that I take seriously.

Through this program, I’ve worked with families who have lost loved ones to the disease and its complications. As a mother, their stories really hit home and their tragic experiences are a reminder that seasonal influenza is serious. I’m proud to work with the American Lung Association to spread the word about the importance of annual vaccination. It’s a simple way to help protect your loved ones from the disease.

2.) Do you have any special tricks of avoiding the flu that you would like to share?

I do anything I can to help keep my daughters from getting sick, so I also make sure they are vaccinated against seasonal influenza every year. The CDC estimates that seasonal influenza alone causes 36,000 deaths and 200,000 hospitalizations every year, and vaccination is the best protection against the virus.

Actually, when my daughter Emma was born, my doctor gave me a flu vaccination before I left the hospital to help prevent spreading this serious disease to my newborn infant. Since then, I make sure we all get vaccinated every year. This includes my husband, my two daughters and even the grandparents in our family.

3.) As a kid skating did you ever worry about getting sick? Has the flu ever hindered your ability to compete?

My mother started taking me to get my flu shot when I was training for the Olympics. One of my friends got influenza and unfortunately wasn’t able to compete because of it. My mom wanted to do everything she could to help me stay healthy, especially as flu season runs right through skating season, and I’ve been getting my flu shot every year since. I haven’t had influenza since I was young and I credit that to getting vaccinated every year. As you can see, getting vaccinated is a bit of a family tradition now!

4.) I have asthma, like many Americans and I also have a fear about the flu shot and its side effects, like many people I know…how would you convince someone like me to get the flu shot this year?

Your decision to get the flu shot is one that should be made with your doctor. But because you have asthma, you are at risk for developing serious complications from influenza. Complications can worsen symptoms of asthma, like wheezing, and can make breathing even more difficult.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends people with asthma get vaccinated every year. In fact, according to the American Lung Association, if 100 percent of people with asthma received the influenza vaccine, up to 156,000 hospitalizations could be prevented each year.

There are more than 250 million Americans recommended for annual vaccination because they are in high-risk groups. I would recommend you visit the American Lung Association’s Faces of Influenza program Web site, http://www.facesofinfluenza.org/, to learn about why vaccination is so important.

5.) Not related to your campaign, but how have you handled being a mother in the age of H1N1?

The best way to help avoid getting the flu is to get the flu shot! The recent outbreak of H1N1 is a strong reminder that influenza is a serious disease. As a mom, my family is my number one priority, and I just took my girls to get vaccinated against H1N1.

A Watch Story

Forgetting your cell phone is the most annoying experience! It becomes an eye opener to your overdependence on that one piece of equipment. It contains all your phone numbers (who memorizes those anymore), is the only on the go way to verbally communicate (germ infested public phones are a No No!) and what better way to ignore overtures or just annoying people in general. Not to mention, you can’t tell the time so you are continuously aggravated with thoughts of being late even when you have nowhere to be, you can’t text or call anyone and you just feel out of the loop.

When I forgot my phone at the hotel during a recent trip out of town, I finally realized after a frustrating day of feeling discombobulated that it was time to start wearing a watch again. Why? I just thought I would have been less paranoid if I was just able to tell time when I got the whim. And loosing the phone made me pay attention to watches so I began to realize it was a shame I did not wear one. And when I thought WWOD (what would Oprah do) I realize that she would wear one and that was it for me.

Personally I think the cell phone is the proverbial video that killed the radio star i.e. the watch. Watch sales have never been the same since cell phones arrived as the cool accessory on the scene. Look at what happened to pay phones. Either way my growing dependence on my cell phone made having a watch less and less important. Back in the day, I used to be a watch lover. I remember getting a Mickey Mouse watch with a black leather band for my ninth birthday. That was my grown up moment and the only thing I wore on my wrist. Throughout the years I have always kept a watch nearby. After all they were a must have for standardized tests to say the least. But it has become easier to slip on a bangle or two to make a look than a watch which provided less variation in a wardrobe.

So after that disastrous weekend I felt it was time to take the plunge. I had noticed that some celebs including Oprah wearing their timepiece on their wrist and was now ever more curious. The right watch can make even the dowdiest outfit seem high end. I’ve also noticed ironically that the watch is the staple for a man in general but the appeal is lost to many women. It has not been easy finding a picture of a woman, not in politics wearing a watch, but a man is never dressed without one. For example, President Barack Obama wears a watch always however, for Michelle Obama sometimes you see it sometimes you don’t. Is it that we view watches merely as an interchangeable accessory and one of our many wrist adornment choices while men are limited in their choices so the relevance of the watch to their wardrobes is greater?

When I decided to purchase a watch, I realized it could not just be any watch. Did I want a strong timepiece or a thin and more feminine bracelet? Did I want a “don’t rock the boat” leather band or a stand out powerful metal band and face? Should I choose show off gold or earth silver? Should it be a square or round face? One thing I knew for sure was that there would be no “bling” on my timepiece. I felt like I had to place similar focus as I would for a diamond ring. I started off with the usual online mass retail sites like Overstock.com, Macys.com, and Amazon.com and soon realized that a watch held more stylistic importance than a bangle as it was seen as part of your personality like a pair of eye glasses so I had to choose well and in person.

After a lengthy (few weeks) search online I decided that it had to be a Fossil gold-toned square metal face and band with a least 35 mm face. I came close many times to purchasing my fav online but hesitated since there were too many question marks in my mind. So, on a recent trip to the Fossil store I finally found the watch I knew only by a number and brief description. In person the oversized look was “a don’t” as it swallowed my wrist. I was not impressed and felt like trying on the watch was like deciding to go back to wearing glasses but realizing at the last minute that my contacts make me look better in pictures. The look just seemed out of place probably because the relevance was deemed since I now was careful to not forget my cell phone. Maybe next time…

The Hole-In-The-Wall Experience

We arrived at the row house and ambled cautiously across the wooden planks that led to the basement. At the appropriate intervals we crouched as if literally entering into the bowels of an ominous cavern and not into a restaurant as we expected. Surprisingly, the dark room that was Thai X-ing revealed a hodge-podge of randomly hoarded artifacts like chemistry lab vials, statues, books, pictures as well as a collection of warm notes and rave reviews framed with essays announcing that amid the unusual decor a fabulous meal awaited us later that evening.

This was our latest “hole-in-the-wall” adventure at a location we had least expected - someone else’s home or so it appeared. One, I had discovered randomly just driving around the District and being Anthony Bourdain curious while looking for new adventures. This was an undiscerning trait necessary to find good food in inconspicuous urban places. Places that I have come to realize serve the best dining treats because the focus is the mission of eating well and not locale or fashion statement.
When the meal began we felt the experience reminiscent of the soup-nazi in Manhattan, a hole-in-the-wall made famous by the Seinfeld series. A brash but skillful chef with a personality is always a welcome. Nevertheless, when Taw, the chef who turned out to be more skillful than brash, brought out the beef salad appetizer our minds were filled with the following adjectives...Amazing! Fresh! Yummy! Basil!Wow! Marvelous! Exploding flavors like fireworks went off in our mouths too quickly to mark their origins. We were delighted. We thanked the chef who was visibly still busy at work in the kitchen dancing around like a ballerina during her solo piece. He was focused and jumping from sink to stove shaking, pouring, tasting. He stopped to let us know he was pleased and that the beef salad is his signature dish. From start to finish, we had never had a Thai meal so good and the extra touch of serving the meal on the banana leaves added to the authentic Thai feel.

What makes this and other such places good hole-in-the-wall eateries? This is such a personal question and for many people the answer varies. To answer, I reminisce on the other such locations I have come to look towards for appetizing reprieve - Quick Pita in Georgetown, the Amsterdam Falafel shop in Adams Morgan, and Chix on 11th and U Street. The traits that unite these places are simple adherence and attention to traditional cooking and uniquely flavorful tastes, fresh, good, healthy and inexpensive. Quick pita serves Middle Eastern fare that is comfort and oozing in garlic but flavorful and tasty. Chix has succulent Peruvian rotisserie chicken with a vegan take on side dishes such as their black bean hummus and pasta and cheese that provide one of a kind treats side-by-side treats. And the Falafel shop serves up a fantastic array of vegetarian dressings for the simple falafel balls fried just right. Good food well done without any pretense and enjoyable especially by me a meat lover.

A lot of folks are surprised at finding good, cheap eats in DC that are not fusion, gourmet but just plain ole traditional and well done. Others are not surprised at the existence of these places but just refuse to step into them because of various prejudices and presumed social faux pas. Or since people like me sometimes hesitate to share their finds maybe they never know where to look.

Every city has great off the beaten path choices. Some are well known and others not so much. Definitely make sure before you eat any where that it is relatively clean and sanitary and certified by the health department. But most importantly don’t judge a place by its raggedy old couch.

Baltimore - Charm City?

Hi Darlings:

They are worlds in contrast with similarities only historically defined by negative realities of crime, drugs and poverty except the magical wand of gentrification seems to not have provided the present prosperity and economic growth to Baltimore that we enjoy in the District. For many Washingtonians, Baltimore City is defined by television shows like the Wire which portray a city without the charm of a small town but rather one surviving on the charms of street hustlers and drug dealers. Although I have never watched the Wire, reading and noting the truth in the plot line was enough for me to create a self-imposed boundary of visiting only the Inner Harbor and no where beyond whenever I decided to venture northward to Baltimore.

This seeming snobbery was and still is a common practice for many other Washingtonians, as well. We’ve been afraid that the city, rampant with more murders and crime than our own would be too violent for us to stomach. Not wanting to get hurt by stray bullets, some or rather many of us fear for our lives, so we choose not to explore more of the city.

However, just as we grew to dislike Baltimore because of a TV show, many of us recently fell in love with the city because of the movie “He’s Not That Into You”. I can recall the jaws of six of my friends spilling forth their contents as they dropped to the floor of the movie theater upon finding out that the city featured in the movie was Baltimore. We wondered whether the “potentially” happening (onscreen) singles scene actually exists in reality. From then on, we were on a mission to find out whether or not there was some charm to the city and contemplated where we should dig to locate it.

With the specific goal of visiting Baltimore more often (It helped that I started dating someone who lived there), I can say after a few months of hanging out in the city there are many charming places to visit and explore. Areas like Patterson Park add an unexpected dimension to the city. Representative of a mid-Atlantic Central Park, this area is pristine and contains a duck pond, an unusual pagoda and endless space for city dwellers to live and play as well as hold community focused events like the recent Polish festival. There are restaurants like those in Canton’s Square with unique personalities and some with amateurish décor with old soul character, instead of a modern, contemporary, monotonic matching of Pier 1 Imports purchases. The coffee shops like Patterson Perk and High Grounds Coffee are the opposite version of big box coffee shops like Starbucks and offer used books amid locally roasted coffee. I am not sure there is another city in the Washington DC metro area with more coffee roasters. And yes, big city gals, free WIFI is provided!

The city is definitely worth visiting even if the blue lights are still present and foreboding. The reality is many neighbors don't have these lights and are worth exploring.

It's been so long and yet it seems like we've been so close but still too far away. I've thought about this blog a lot during the last few months. I've seen fantastic "Diva Bugs" in random places like B'more and have taken pictures with hopes of sharing with you. I've had great adventures which I figured you would enjoy hearing the scintillating dets, but alas my fingers refused to do the typing. And then again there is always the fantastic urge to comment on the ridiculous and extravagant world of the celebs and those of reality tv but I haven't. I even refrained from mentioning how I think that Michelle Obama's thick, clip-in-the-front belts and the onslaught of bubble dresses are sneaking the 80's back into our stratosphere and that we must protest! but I stopped my fingers...after all despite this handicap Michelle is diva divine...we aspire.

So, tune in ... whenever and I hope we are able to once again have a fantastic time sharing and laughing.

Michelle Obama and the Inauguration Dress Dilemma

Who wants to have the entire world weighing on what they plan to wear for the big night? It's like getting married and having the 70 year old store owner telling you what you should wear before even meeting you or knowing your likes and dislikes. Womens Wear Daily discussed Michelle Obama's inauguration wear suggestions from various designers. Click here to read the article.

(Isaac Mizrahi great option and I loved that he included suggestions for her daughters Malia and Sasha)

When I saw some of the suggestions of what Michelle Obama should wear to the inauguration my eyebrows shot to my hairline. I thought my pet peeve while applying for colleges. If I received an application in the mail that spelled my name wrong I would toss it to the side unopened unless it was a school I REALLY wanted to attend. Some of the drawings, which were considered one-of-a-kind designs for HER don't even look physically like her. Its like interviewing for a job and getting the name of the company wrong!

(Kai Milla: This dress looks divine! If Michelle O does not want can I have!)
(Monique Lhuillier: Fantastic! Feminine takes her height into consideration, shows off the arms, and the gathering details soften the look.)

(Zac Posen: I'm surprised that this is not more flattering. Maybe he needs more time.)
(Chado Ralph Rucci - this is great art and would look better hanging on one of my walls)
(Karl Lagerfeld is definitely channeling more Jackie O than Michelle O in more ways than one.)

(Badgley Mischka - This would work well in the 80's. With the mermaid design such as this mingling in a crowd of too many would be difficult.) (Christian Lacroix: Fierce but how more divine would the dress be without the cape)
(Betsey Johnson got the descriptors right and even Michelle's signature brooch but the color/design is so flashy I don't thing Michelle would go there. And I would balk if she did! This one is a no go.)

Lipstick Jungle - Season 2, Episode 10 recap

Hi Darlings:

Yes, Lipstick Jungle was back last Friday after a one-week hiatus and I am hoping no buzz is good buzz in regards to whether the show will be cancelled after this season.

This episode was sort of the palm to the forehead "D-uh" episode. Most of the plot I and more than likely you have probably guessed would happen.

Let's start with Nico - obviously the title of the episode "Bye Bye Baby" reflected on her storyline. Crazy Megan's parents came for the baby. They mentioned that she is leaving school and they are taking her and the baby back to Indiana. So much for the huge trust fund Nico gave baby Charlie and the tough exterior she pretended to have before. I felt sorry for Nico because she is facing an issue many professional women go through ... they run in the proverbial rat race and look up at 40 with no kids or daddy prospects, which leads us to Kirby. I was not surprised Nico lost the baby - we all knew she did not have a legal leg to stand on but I did not think 'bye bye baby' would also mean bye bye Kirby. Frankly, Nico needs him and so do we ... every chick/girlie show needs at least ONE cute leading man. Wendy's hubbie Shane and Sal aren't quite there yet. What do you think? But, now that Nico has figured she wants a baby NOW Kirby was definitely not the right fit...he is essentially a kid himself.

Wendy seems to always find herself in some sort of ethical conundrum. This time she literally made a deal with a devil "aka Steven" to get her movie made. Steven resorts to whatever it takes including tarnishing reputations just to get the green light on a movie. I just think in the end Wendy with be deceived by him again and will not get any credit for what could be a successful movie. I hope she had him sign an agreement. Her husband wants to be the breadwinner and he wants her a former movie exec to stay home, get fat and have more babies. Can he stop! She is obviously able to balance both work and the kids. His "man-esteem" is really low. They need to find a way for him to feel more secure in their relationship and so he can be happy and they can focus on saving their daughter from her potential of becoming a statistic.

Victory always come out on top. She encourages Wendy's teenager daughter to participate in a potental statutory rape situation and Wendy gives her permission to be her daughter's confidante. She needs to get a new client and Wendy makes phone call and she is in the door. It's good to be Victory...if the name fits...

As for outfits, hmmm...why did the episode start with Wendy wearing a not so cute scarf indoors...weird. But, she did redeem her fashion sense later on by wearing a puffed sleeved lambswool leather jacket. Nico had on another schiff but this time its was sort of patchworked and purple which was not a conservative choice by any means. And lastly, Victory's necklaces were cute. She wore a necklace with her signature roses in the end and also paired a malachite beaded necklace with ivory pearl earrings...great combo.

James Bond Made Me Cut Her Bangs

Hi Darlings:

My sister saw the Quantum of Solace the latest James Bond movie and afterwards came home and asked me to cut her bangs! To say I was hesistant would be an understatement. I wouldn't even dare cut my own hair much less my bangs. As a matter of fact, the only thing I dare to do with my hair is style it after someone else blows it dry and of course washes it. I said no at first BUT I was sure after noticing how my own hair stylist cut my bangs last year that I knew exactly how it should be done. After all, I spend many Saturday hours at the hair salon, enough to make me a semi-expert on the styling of other people's hair. I have observed the way the stylists at the salon always keep a piece to the last cut section to guide in cutting the next. I knew from personal experience what the favorable length of the bangs should be. And most importantly I sew and create jewelry by either thinking up a design concept or recreating a piece similar to one I've seen before, so I convinced myself that I should give it a go. I grabbed the scissors and a rat tail comb and started cutting one-eighth of an inch at a time until I was satisfied. After the first snip she started sweating bullets and actually jumped up. That would have been my reaction too if the shoe were on the other foot. But with half of her bangs cut and work the next day as well as a fear of cutting her bangs herself, my sister had no choice but to stick it out with me.
Frankly, I think I did a good job if I do say so myself! I just don't know if we will be as lucky if she has the same urge next time.

MTV in DC - Be The Change Inauguration Ball

MTV will host the Be the Change Inaugural Ball on January 20th at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington in honor of President-Elect Barack Obama.

Lipstick Jungle Episode 9 Inspired Look

In Episode 9, I really enjoyed seeing Victory's and Dahlia's earrings. They were gold, delicate and in the shape of a leaf or flowers. Just a simple statement that worked well with pulled back hair when the blooming flower version is worn or with the hair down when the leaf is chosen. Lipstick Jungle - Season 2, Episode 9 recap

Hi Darlings:

So many phrases come to mind after viewing last Friday's episode of Lipstick Jungle -a few would be Susie homemaker, ticking biological clock, lonely hearts, manipulating manager and the hand that rocks the table is the hand that rules the world ... well maybe not the last one. I sure hope this show returns next season because my list of plotlines I want to see resolved keeps growing by the episode.

I think someone forgot to tell Wendy that not only is the economy suffering but that this was the Thanksgiving episode and not the Chrismahanakwanzaka. Who decorates that much for Thanksgiving? Although I did appreciate the environmentally conscious effort to shop in a way to minimize their carbon footing, I found the streamers, pumpkins in every inch of the house, overdone arts and crafts and Fall leaves too much! She has claimed and owns the "Susie Homemaker meets Rock n Roll Mom" title. It's hers take it, Martha Stewart look out.

The Rock n Roll part comes with her outfit that was a darling black slacks and blazer with a simple white t-shirt with emblazoned/bedazzled silver cross in the front. I liked that she paired the outfit with a slicked back ponytail.

Her biggest issue this episode was surprisingly her husband's lonely hearts manager. I look at Josie's character and think of Rear Window and wonder what Jimmy Stewart would say about this successful woman with the dying dog as her only friend and no one to count on so she relies on her married client to help her on Thanksgiving. She seems too desperate, oblivious to others and me centered a combination that will probably lead to her trying to seduce him or just take him away from his family at odd hours of the day for her various crisis. What do you think? But, I have faith that Wendy's husband will stand firm in his conviction to spare his family the shame and embarrassment of an affair. Too bad he has no control over the conspiracy theorist that is his mother-in-law who is never happy or statisfied unless she leaves her scent on her daughter's life.

I am so happy for Victory because not only did she find a way to forgive Dahlia and forget her drama causing ways (thank you Rosie Perez is back!) but she also advanced in fashion from Cindi Lauper or Julia Roberts prostitute in Pretty Woman inspired accessories and colors to as close to Chanel chic as she could get. I loved the green with blue trim Chanel inspired blazer she wore with black bootcut jeans and modernized with a casual flare using a metal with beads multi-strand necklace instead of conservative pearls.

I think her sketching has improved to the point where it seems like she can do it without even looking ... wink. In designing a wedding dress for a Dahlia referred client who was more robust than she expected, she showed her compassionate side ... hmmm and so did Dahlia. But I must ask how long before they start fighting again. Either way, I hope they stay together as a duo because I liked that their drink of choice was Coquito as in Rosie adds flavor and spice to the show. Click here to find out how to make.

Nico makes me paranoid about being single and childless. I almost want to say a prayer for her and hope that she does not either drive herself to mental illness or get arrested. She needs to stay away from manipulating Megan who is the biggest user of them all! What is wrong with her? I don't understand why she does not try to have her own child with Kirby. Megan dumps the child with her for an unexpected "extended visit". Does not call to check on it and calls to say she cannot take car of the child. So, why didn't she think about this when she was sleeping with Nico's deceased husband. And, doesn't the baby have an immense trust fund...ie she could probably hire a nanny. I think Kirby is within his rights to be mad at Nico because I can just see Megan reacting from a fight with her parents and when they come around in Episode 10 or 11 she will swoop back in and take the baby back leaving Nico foreseeably heart broken. (le sigh)

Dekka - Food, Parties and Black Friday Sales!

I heard from Joshua Tiktin at Dekka boutique who informed me about the launch party event tonight, November 21st celebrating their partnership with Albus Cavus, a non-profit group that supports artists. There will be free food, drinks, clothing designers, artists, vibe, and a DJ - sounds like a party to me!

Also, Dekka is having a huge Black Friday Blowout Bash (does that sound exciting or what?) on November 28th from 9am to 9pm, for those who will actually be able to have digested their turkey and get out of the house.

James Bond - Shaken and Stirred!

Mini spoiler alert!

I keep forgetting to mention my James Bond experience. As you know I wrote about the Quantum of Solace parties in DC and I even discussed Casino Royale last year. So, being a loyal James Bond fan I decided to have brunch at Busboys and then went to see the movie with the crew - names withheld. I was not only observing the beauty that is Daniel Craig (great arse in tight pants) but also on the edge of my seat for the action as well. The movie was a nail biter. I was constantly amazed at the use of props in the fighting scenes, hold my breath hoping they survive, sinking my nails into chair and sitting back when they made it though with only a scratch. Sigh! It was fantabulous.

But, for an avid fan of double_O_7, I was disappointed. James Bond has always been the best chick lit hero - there I said it for you guys who thought it was about the action. I alway think of Bond girl purring in Octopussy. Click here for the youtube video of the original trailer and you will see what I mean. He always fights the bad guys but saves the girl and there is always a kissing scene.

Missing from this movie: The bond theme song, the martini - shaken not stirred, the romance and great kisser that was James Bond and the gadgets! Where were the gadgets - we even had gadgets in Casino Royale! And what is up with -he's drinking Vermouth with a twist of lemon.

Le sigh! If you just like action films this is the movie for you...

Lipstick Jungle - Is it or isn't it Cancelled?

The question of the day seems to be whether or not Lipstick Jungle has been cancelled, given the ax, thrown over the cliff, wiped off the schedule by NBC. So far I've received emails from many of you concerned that the show has not been canceled. So, where are we now?

On Monday, Entertainment Weekly broke the news that the show's producers were told that no more episodes will be ordered. From an insiders point of view this is the unofficial axing.

However, according to NY Times talk of the show's demise is premature.

Ben Silverman, the co-chairman of NBC Entertainment, said Monday that NBC will now definitely finish the 13 episodes that the network originally ordered — it has 4 more episodes to run — and may order more if the show “grows more.” The series has always been among the best-rated among high-income households, which NBC likes

According to James Hibberd at Live Feed, Brooke Shields was quoted saying

Brooke Shields told US Weekly that "Lipstick Jungle" is not canceled:
"They thought that because 'My Own Worst Enemy' has been shut down that the same thing had happened to us, and it's not true ... they're not breaking down the sets. We're still working. We still have more to do, so it's erroneously presented
that we've been canceled, thank God."

According to Hibberd,

The outcry over "Enemy" being canceled was fairly weak while the outcry
over "Lipstick" was impressively vehement (fans are mailing tubes of lipstick to
the network). Sources say "Lipstick" backers (some inside NBC) are doing a full
court press (public and private) to lobby for a pickup. Shields' comment is less
a reflection of reality than part of a concerted effort to change reality. Few of NBC's shows have received this kind of outpouring of positive fan reaction. Does it really want to cancel an underperforming show that's getting a passionate response?
Another factor is Friday's episode. Two days after the cancellation stories made the rounds, the show went up 17% in the adult demo from the week before. And the previous week's episode went up 20%. Those are big gains ... but they're big gains from small numbers. Friday had 3.6 million viewers and 1.4 rating among adults 18-49. Unless Shields is willing to work pro bono, that's still too low for a scripted drama in primetime. Internal "Lipstick" defenders note the show is gaining plenty from DVR viewing, but so did "Life" when it moved to the same slot (you may not know your show was shipped into broadcast Siberia, but your Tivo does).

So fans of the show, is this a gimmick to get the viewers/fans/your attention or are the executives of the show rethinking a decision that was in the works. What do you think?

Lipstick Jungle - Season 2, Episode 8 recap

Hi Darlings:

This episode of Lipstick Jungle had an unexpected surprise in the end that I felt in many ways went against the basic plot progression I expected. It's unfortunate that the show was canceled because now we will never know if the scenario has a possibility of changing.

I think this was definitely a skinny jeans and knee high hunting boots episode. Since the ladies spent most of the episode at a country spa, we did not see much by the way of fashion either in the clothes they were wearing or the accessories chosen. But, I did like the plaid fitted blazer Victory wore in the end...great accompaniment to the tall boots and jeans...sort of like preppy meets hunter.

Everyone except Victory at some point during the episode thought about giving up the NYC rat race for a more fulfilling life. The spa was run by a retired former boss of Nico's. Seeing her made Nico want to move away from the city or just have a country home. These thoughts definitely highlighted the age difference between her and Kirby because he loves the city and would never think about moving. Wrench meet plan and vice versa. I wonder if Griffin would move with her because their interactions at work are bordering on flirtation...if you ask me. He seems like his eyes are definitely cast in her direction.

Wendy received a job interview - unknown to her - via Nico's help. But I guess being home has gotten to her and she is mentally no longer into the 14+ hour day anymore. Good for her! In the end she decides to not accept the position. Will she go at it on her own or will she just become a housewife? I don't she her becoming an at home Martha Stewart.

As for Victory, as usual she is the eye in the center of a whirling storm. They are actually at the spa because of her and her distress over finding out that Joe wanted to marry her. Go figure! While at the spa she comes to the conclusion that she actually loves him...so why did she kiss the contractor. Go figure the plot jumps too much in this show. In the end, the ladies get stranded in the woods and Joe had to save the day. Victory excitedly waits for him only to be met with the surprise of him saying good bye and giving her ownership of her store. Did he just do that? I think it will/would have been up to her to get him back. She is too flighty when it comes to guys and gets stuck in the moment too much - never thinking long term or the future. Hopefully she will get over the "young one" syndrome and get it together.

I was trying to figure out what to write about today. Frankly, I was going to link to other fashion related articles. I actually just saw this great article in New York Times about this wife/mom/worker and her experience with Spanx, you know the modern girdle and her eventual decision to just work out. She was pondering her use of Spanx and I was into the article until she said this - "For years I didn’t even bother to weigh myself because I thought all I needed was Spanx, the same Lycra and spandex flab-management system that helped Gwyneth Paltrow hide her haunting post-pregnancy paunch."

I have decided lately that I am not sure I am into Gwyneth Paltrow or ever will be. Why? I am not sure you are aware but Gwyneth started a blog entitled GOOP where she advocates the philosophies "Make, Go, Get, Do, Be, See" and give sage advice on how she lives her life. What they heck do these terms mean? Well you have to sign up for the newsletter to find out. I was curious so I did. Some of the advice on living well is simple and should be well received but in many ways the GOOP site is purely about the mantra "My life is perfect because I am perfect. Try if you can to be like me." But, like the urge to open a fashion magazine just because the cover picture is pretty so is the urge to click open the GOOP emails. They start off with nice pastel colors.

When in the DO email she had experts who for example, said this:

Start with sleep. Sleep eight hours or more each night. Do what you have to
do to get to sleep; there are plenty of natural agents that work. Try them:
herbs (valerian), tea (chamomile), amino acids (tryptophan or hydroxy-tryptophan) and vitamins (magnesium and B6). These can be powerful sedatives and work just as well as prescription agents without the risks. Sleep plays a powerful role in determining your appetite, energy and attitude. Sleep better for two weeks before changing your diet. Then try eliminating “white” foods, those that are made with sugar, white flour and milk. If you eliminate them one at a time, start with flour, then eliminate dairy and then sugar. Sugar is easier to quit after a few weeks of no other “white” stuff. Remember high fructose corn syrup and dextrose are sugar by another name. Give yourself about two weeks to get used to each before eliminating the next one.

Michelle and Barack Obama in DC - Will They Still Have Date Nights?

Hi Darlings:

The buzz around the impending arrival of the Obamas is deafening! I feel like we need a red carpet moment when they arrive…just because. I was sitting here thinking about them as a couple and a family. Already I get the vibe – and I am sure you do to – that they are social enough, hip, care a lot about each other and they are a hard working team, of course. But more than anything else they seem like a regular ole couple. Seriously, how many other first couples have we seen going out on dates? We do know that the Edwards go to McDonald’s for their anniversary (or they used to) and the Gores tongue kiss in public (hmm)– but we can’t look to them in this analysis because well...they are “also ran” but have never been. So, they are still just regular everyday people like us, but with more money and popularity.

Before the Obamas I don’t think I ever thought of First Couples doing anything other couples do besides holding hands. We would see them walking to Air Force 1/helicopter holding hands, walking from Air Force 1/helicopter holding hands, going on vacation to Camp David and walking to and from Air Force 1/helicopter holding hands with their children. It was beginning to look like some sort of First Couple protocol which I imagined said something like “First couples should only hold both of each other’s hand when dancing at the Inaugural Ball. When in public stand exactly one foot apart. Be sure to smile for the cameras when reporters are present. Hold one hand whenever an aircraft is present. And when you get to the top stair of said aircraft, turn to the crowd, hold one hand and both of you wave with the other hand.”

But, now I think the Obamas present an exciting new addition to DC and the Presidency. One of the first videos we have of them after Mr. Obama became the President-elect was of them going out on a date in Chicago. Fantabulous! When was the last time we saw a First couple dress up and go on a date?

I must say they are coming here to the District at the right time. DC has become more cosmopolitan in the last few years. We have lots of new restaurants that are hip and rival many in New York by way of offerings and décor. They will have many date night options and I am just curious as to whether they will keep those dates or follow the usual protocol. I hope they do the former.

UPDATE: Maybe they won't be going out on dates that much anymore afterall...:(

Great DC Find: James Bond Quantum of Solace parties

Hi Darlings:

Can I tell you I am on pins and needles waiting for the new Bond movie "Quantum of Solace" to hit theaters this Friday on November 14th.

It also seems like the rest of Washington, DC is also "shaken not stirred" in expectation as well with all the Bond themed parties that are planned. I remember being skeptical about Daniel Craig as 007. I did not think of him as debonnaire as Pierce Brosnan or Roger Moore or Sean Connery - my three most favorite Bonds. Could he wear a tux with the same level class or order a martini in the same as a matter of fact way and fight the bad guys without looking shaken? I was not sure about the more violent, modern portrayal of the character that I've grown to love. But after seeing Casino Royale and all the great action scenes in that movie I was convinced. I hopethere will be more jump from building to building action scenes!

Either way, it will be interesting to see the current installment in the Bond series as it takes up a few hours after the end of Casino Royale so I assume we might get to see an angry and grief stricken Bond at least in the beginning. I always think when movies do this that I should rent the previous movie so its fresh in my mind before I see the current one but never do since I can never find the time. How do you prepare for sequels that flow in plot right from the previous movie?

Lipstick Jungle - Season 2, Episode 7 Recap

As promised, here is the Episode 7 recap.

When we left the last episode Victory was at the center of most of the drama. It's always ironic that while the writers take Wendy and Nico to the edge of the proverbial cliff and bring them back by the end of the show, Victory can never seem to resolve her issues in time.

Victory is clueless as to why Joe is not returning her calls and no one will clue her in. This same lack of awareness prompted her lack of professionalism in her decision not to thank Joe or anyone else who helped her get her show together in episode 6. Her current goal is to get a deal designing sports wear for a tennis star (invoke Maria Sharapova). Yet, for some perplexing reason she cannot figure out how the game of tennis works and needs Joe there to help her land the deal. Why? The idea is that licensing fees bring in steady cash. In many ways, this situation worked well with the rest of the plot because it just so happens Nico is launching a sports magazine. Joe gets up the nerve to attend the event to help her and sees her up close with Tiki Barber (I think) who is teaching her to play golf. Like Joe implies earlier to Nico in does not get into situations business or otherwise to loose and this just reminds him he is looosing. With that he blows the deal with the tennis star. Victory believes he is tempermental until Ellen, Joe's secretary slips up and tells Victory that he had purchased a ring with the intent of asking her to marry him. Her eyebrows shoot up...which means more drama to come.

I am however thankful that Victory's fashion in this episode was not over the top 80's reject ensemble...think neon pink fur bag. On second thoughts she did over do it at the sports related magazine launch by wearing the white dress with diamond jewelry and fur trimmed sleeves...go figure. But the signature necklace with the floral pendants and a great soft pink and wide legged blazer look in the first scene was nice.

Nico's drama we will put under the title of weird and freaky. Kirby's mom (Roseanna Arquette) is not the typical mother that she expected. Needless to say they are wearing the same 5' red heels and with her boobs singing the "free us from bondage" song she is most definitely a great stand in for Rosie Perez as far as assets go. Kirby is weird as he tells her entirely too much about his life. What guy lets his mom into his romantic relationship on such a detailed level. Weird. In the end, I was not sure if I should gear myself up for an electra complex reveal and frankly I believe Nico was worried about that too. She can see the rival in his mom and pegs her as competitor not friend.

I only like the silver dress Nico wore to the magazine event. I loved the mini pleats at the neckline and the broader ones on the skirt section. Her fashion contribution was mainly in the way of accessories. The necklacewith the flowers that dipped down her chest in mock v-neck was great.

Wendy never seems to get that she suffocates her husband's individuality. She plays on his turf by joining as a producer and suggesting/telling him how to compose the music for the movie. Thankfully she got the hint in the end but only because she felt guilt for kissing someone else. In the end the made up and I loved the white nightgown with the pleated front. Josie Scotter (aka Vanessa Marcil) his new agent makes Wendy extremely jealous...I sense future drama.

I loved the simple makeup pairing with statement earrings and simple blue dress look Wendy wore to the party. She looks best with form fitted and simple. I tend to pay attention to her jewelry as they always seem to look like antiques.

Overall, I sense the trend of pleats and floral jewelry...hmmm.

Lipstick Jungle - Season 2, Episode 6 Recap

Hi Darlings:

This is one of two Lipstick Jungle episodes to be recapped today. So, stay tuned for the next post after this one. Today is officially Lipstick Jungle overload day!

Episode 6 could easily be titled doing the unexpected.

Most of the interesting drama is in Victory's corner as usual. She is having a opening fashion show for her store which is finally finished. Hence part of the reason why we have not seen Rodrigo. But low and behold she is having trouble getting the show together, calls him for help and he rushes over. In the meantime, Joe is realizing she is the one and wants to propose after Nico tells him Victory is single. Fascinating! Everyone but for Rosie Perez - aka Dahlia gets to help in this crisis moment that even includes a stain on the grand finale wedding dress. Go figure. Dahlia is fired! So long Rosie. Just when your outfits were getting more an more divine...the exit ruffle dress - lovely! We were not surprised at all that Victory ONLY thanked Rodrigo for his help with the store - not money bags Joe and that she kissed him in front of everyone. Of course, she and Joe would never get together half-way through the season?! The question lies as to whether they will merge at the end of Season two or whether he will be her BIG.

Wendy is getting back on the professional horse, so to speak. She has a story idea about a girl in love with a horse and wants to pitch it to Sal. Her daughter thinks it won't fly and I too think its a ridiculous idea. It does not look like her working time out has given her a creative boost. Needless to say things have changed at work. Griffin is stifling Sal's decision making powers. I find this interesting and wonder how long until Nico and Sal and others rebel against his controlling tendencies. Annoyed with the new and y ung VP who reacts like her teenage daughter to her idea, Wendy leaves. She discovers a new writer and starts her own production company...finally!

Nico has baby love when she says Charles's illegitimate child. After all these years her biological clock is ticking and she seems like she now wants a child of her own. I saw her pick up the crying baby who eventually was soothed by her touch and was thankful the mother did not have to fight to get the baby back! She also delivers momentos for the baby to have when he gets older as well as a gift. Thank goodness she is not giving more money to the woman who broke up her marriage! As for Kirby, he finally tells her he is a part time paparazzo...classy. Well at least in the end he ditches the idea of being a waiter at Victory's story opening/fashion show and eventually decides to start her own production company.

The fashion diva of this episode was actually Rosie Perez! The v-neck red dress with the full skirt and silver necklace - nice as well as the silk trench. So far, I've noticed in this and the previous episode the fascinating use of the trench coat design.

Great DC Find: Sarah Jessica Parker Filming in the Washington Metro Area

The women of Sex and the City have been in the news a lot lately. Most notably Sarah Jessica Parker has been seen this week filming her latest movie production for HBO in Baltimore "The Washingtonienne". SJP's is the executive producer on the project based on a book by D.C. sex blogger Jessica Cutler.

I am sure you remember the not so recent scandal about the Capitol Hill congressional staff assistant who was fired for detailing her active sexual life, including receiving money for having sex, in her blog. She is in the photo above. I actually never saw her picture before researching for this post and frankly I was expecting someone more polished. But then again she did pose for Playboy! I guess looks can be deceiving. Needless to say, I am sure those men featured in her blog are not exactly happy about this latest reincarnation of Sex and the Blogger. I guess for her they provided the trysts that keep on paying!

I try to keep the writing on this blog politics neutral, but this phenomenal, history making, awe inspiring, pinch myself did that really just happen moment deserves all the attention in the world.
We just elected the first African-American President in the United States!! Congratulations President-Elect Barack Obama!

Many times we look back on defining moments in time - the March on Washington with Martin Luther King Jr., the signing of Declaration of Independence, the suffragists fighting for and winning the Womens' Right to Vote, the end of slavery (silence) - and think will we ever have that opportunity, such a moment or any semblance of a chance to make such a difference in the lives of people in our communities at home and around the world during our lifetime. On November 4, 2008 (TODAY!), we were given that opportunity to change the direction of history and we met this challenge head on. Together as Americans we can and have accomplished so much. People power is unbelievable and from this day on should never be taken for granted. We have now learned that we can dream about the unforeseen and wish for the seemingly unattainable and plan for beyond the first step and know that success can be ours because hopefully in all ways we will "not be judged by the color of [our] skin, but by the content of [our] character." Election Day Fashion Dilemma - Voting on November 4th

Hi Darlings:

For Halloween this year I dressed up as Amy Winehouse and spent some time (not a lot) thinking about this costume. I debated applying fake tattoos but decided against doing this as there was no guarantee that it would wash off as easily as I would like. So, in short I was a tattoo-less Winehouse with straight teeth. The most interesting aspect of dressing like Amy W. was not that all the costume items except the fake eyelashes were in my closet but that EVERYONE and their mother had the same idea. Go figure! Needless to say, that costume dilemma is out of the way. But then I started thinking of Election Day not because of the many election night parties but because of the emotions involved either way with the result. So I thought what would a Diva wear.

Divas like everyone else get emotional. Yes we do...we just know how to control our facial reactions. Example - you walk by a firiend and she is wearing polka dots and striped shirt. You are shocked of course, but you still walk over and give her a kiss-kiss greeting. At this point, you are being in seen in public with her but whatever she is your friend.

So I am debating wearing mascara today or not wearing mascara today since I will either be wiping away tears or shaking my head really hard in disbelief. Either way I will end the day as an emotional Diva and I have to believe that I will be wiping away tears no matter what. So, does it matter whether I wear mascara or not - NO! Because the only fashion statement that I care to make is too get up and get out and VOTE!!

Darlings - don't let fashion get in the way oof doing your duty. VOTE!

Lipstick Jungle Episode 5 Inspired Look

This weeks episode focused on beautiful stand out rings and although the outfits were - just - okay, the coupling of the trench dress and large, colorful belt was inspiring.

When I saw the rings I thought of my favorite places to purchase cocktail rings, if I were not designing them myself. Cecile et Jeanne came to mind and it has been my favorite albeit favorite window shopping place for years. The cocktail ring designs are darling and simply divine. Their collections are never same and have a starting price of over $100. (See first two pics)

I also like Diva in Annapolis which offers many wonderful options. And of course Nido's in Georgetown. And Swarovski at the Pentagon City Fashion Centre Mall with prices that start as low as $80. Hugs and besos.

Lipstick Jungle - Season 2, Episode 5 recap

Hi Darlings:

Sorry for the delay in the write up of this week's Lipstick Jungle episode. Like the title, this week's plot line does not make much of any sense whatsoever. What does "The Lyin', the Bitch and the Wardrobe" mean anyway? I am still trying to figure out how it works with the plot besides the obvious association with The Chronicles of Narnia. The ladies were being honest with each other. Wendy told them that she almost flat out cheated on her husband. Kirby lied about getting money but it was not an act at this time that warranted landing in the title of the episode, although I think it will be in the future. No one had much of a wardrobe and the only one annoyed enough to be b!tchy aught to have been Joe who was stalked by Victory the entire episode however he mildly entertained her fears and in the end he was sweet about the whole situation and her...so go figure.

In short, Victory spent the entire episode chasing an actual dream which literally and figuratively led her to Joe. She wanted to stop him from going on a mountain climbing trip that she felt would lead to his death or harm. Maybe her random dreamscape was the "Narnia" moment in the show. Random! What I want to know is where was Rodrigo? She did not think about him and we did not see him. Is he gone? I think she cares too much about Joe to let him wander too far out of her life.

Wendy is confused and I hope she gets it together soon. There is nothing wrong with the "vacation" that she is on right now. Maybe she should see her time at home and away from work as a moment to regroup, hang out with her kids and take some yoga classes. See how well Nico is doing and she has yoga but I guess she also has a job as well. Hmmm...

Nico and Kirby's relationship is not healthy spiritually for him. The pressure to go on high end ski trips to Aspen and eat at nice restaurants is causing him to have to find new ways to make more money. I mean he is a waiter dating a powerful magazine editor. Shockingly, he is transitioning from legitimate struggling photographer to paparazzi. Pride goes before the fall, but this is going to be exciting! I see this relationship going nowhere fast. Soon he will probably be selling pictures of her to fond one of their trips. Ah amore! Hmmm...I wonder if she will land in Griffin's arms when they break up?

As for fashion, the only item of clothing that raised my eyebrows was Victory's trench dress with over sized red belt in the final scene. If the stores were still open, I would've ran out and purchased one before even writing this post. But alas, they are closed. So my trench dress will have to wait for the perfect mate. The cocktail rings also did the talking in this Lipstick Jungle episode and made the biggest fashion splash. They were simply divine!

Fierce Looks of the Week

I saw these looks and the only word that came to mind was FIERCE! Some celebs like Elle MacPherson always look great no matter what. But others like Jessica Biel are frumpy on a daily basis, like the rest of us, but know how to turn it up 10 notches for the red carpet. It's always great to see them all dressed up from time to time.
Elle Mac"fierce"son's boots were fab to the max. I love the height and the fringe details.
Nicole post baby bump finally has a lot of curves to show off!

I know they are the Olsens but I always like simple and chic done well. And finally they got it right in that department.

Halle Berry - The Hair Evolution

Hi Darlings:
I saw the above picture of Halle Berry's new curly hairstyle the other day and I began to reminisce how a few years ago women were getting the "Halle" and not the "Rihanna". The "Halle" or her original close cropped short do was absolutely divine. In my book, nothing she has done since could ever top the fierceness of that style. The "straight and mainstream" that she has been wearing for the last two years or so is a nice look on her but it does not bring out her strong facial features the way the "Halle" did. It just worked for her and ever since I've been hoping she would go back to that look.

In many ways, I sympathize with her because my hair was really short for about 7 years and my styling options were short, wet and curly or short, dry and curly. And the occasional headband or slick back look helped spice up my hair options but it always went back to short, dry and curly or short, wet and curly. Not much innovation there. Now my hair is long and I love having options, so unfortunately for these very same reasons we may never see the "Halle" again.

Angela and Vanessa Simmons- "Daddy's Girls"

We can probably soon say move over Lauren, Heidi and Audrina (of the Hills) and hello Vanessa and Angela Simmons. According to Black Voices, Angela and Vanessa are set to have a new show on MTV called Daddy's Girls. In this show, they will showcase their already blossoming careers as well as their personal lives - imagine that!

Wasn't it just yesterday they were in high school or just coming on the fashion scene pondering the age old question "What am I going to do with my life?" Now, we will be able to watch Vanessa as she works on her first movie. They now have a popular shoe and clothing line called Pastry and the show will spotlight the development of this brand. It's amazing to see how much they've developed from being the "kids" on Run's House.

Gone are the days when Angela wore not so fashionable gear in high school and Vanessa was a model rehearsing for her first acting role on Guiding Light, where she is now. Come to think of it, their love lives are getting a little spicier too! This is definitely a show I will watch!

I also like that every time I see them on the red carpet they are always look great.

They can never be accused of making any "worst dressed" list. They have evolved into true fashionistas. Hugs and besos.

The Dilemma of the Ever Growing Purse...

My friend Leon recently moaned on his site Listen to Leon about being attacked by extremely large purses while attending the Media Mavens event at the Park last Tuesday. I was at that event and can attest to it being extremely crowded and hard to maneuver from one end of the room to the next. I too have marveled how the size of purses have grown in stores and with the options I choose for my closet. I used to be a small purse gal. My purses had to be large enough for my cell phone, lipstick, keys and ID and be able to fit snugly under my arms and out of the way. Ever since I bought into the big bag craze I find that I carry around things that I just don't need. We won't go there with the details.

At this point, I would venture to say that I really don't need to lift too many dumbbells in the gym because my bag works well as a substitute. But on the other hand, although heavy my big purses look undeniably fabulous hanging from my forearm.

Vivienne Westwood Event at Muleh

Hi Darlings:

For me, on Thursday night last week all roads led to Muleh on 14th and S St. because 1.) Sarah Jessica Parker's (aka "Carrie's") wedding dress from the Sex and the City movie was on display.

Yes, you remember the dress and the scene...Big broke her heart, she is wearing ostrich feathers in her hair and running in the streets of New York devastated! Let me tell you I was heartbroken too! And 2.) Vivienne Westwood's entire Anglomania collection was available for up close viewing. Oh yes, as a given, the fashionistas were in attendance...it was a lovely event.

I loved the Carrie dress although It seemed to have more presence on screen than It did in person. I almost expected It to take up the space of at least 3 persons and to challenge me in height. But It did not. From a seamstress's point of view It was extremely well made. The craftsmanship was divine! I was in awe of the stitching on the dress as I was with the rest of the line. The entire collection was unique, and not over the top, with amazing details and lots of neutral colors. This surprised me but not really because this collection always seems more tame than the other Vivienne. W. collections.

I just heard about the death of Jennifer Hudson's mom Darnell Donerson and brother Jason Hudson. Both were shot in their Chicago home. What a sad situation for her and her family! My heart definitely goes out to her. This is a nightmare no one wants to experience. Her nephew Julian King is currently missing. Click here for more information.

Lipstick Jungle - Season 2, Episode 4

Hi Darlings:

Tonight's episode started with a tremendous amount of lovemaking on the part of Nico and Victory! Not much fashion to discuss there! Thankfully for this write-up the rest of the show was suprisingsly not boring in comparison since the bulk of the fashion was refreshingly grecian inspired and the plot line twisted and turned.

The episode was fascinating because not only were we - the audience - introduced to Nico's family, but so were Wendy and Victory! And they've been friends for how long... Who would've pegged her for the girl from Queens who made it big? And, how about that character of a brother who never met an illegal offer or impulse he could say no to? I am with Griffin (formerly of Las Vegas); I definitely thought she was from Connecticut! Aside: Griffin needs more action on the show! Fashion-wise nothing about her understated but wonderfully accessorized simplicity screams "when the A train chugged by my building rattled". She is too polished which is my one complaint about her style. But for the accessories it would almost seem that she is wearing close to the same dress but in a different color. I loved that she opted for a little more variety with the tan pencil skirt and pink sweater with an amazing orange sorbet inspired chain link necklace. These two colors together were darling! And her white Grecian inspired dress for the party at Central Park was made more memorable with the two diamond jeweled belts.

As for Wendy, she was able to deal emotionally with what she was going through on the inside and bond with her daughter at the same time. I understand her pain and denial. She just lost a job she enjoyed, however on some level I think she might be needed at home especially with her daughter on the verge of finding and getting into trouble. I was fascinated at her ability to create such a tall stack of pancakes for breakfast! How fascinating the over-exaggerated way the director chose to show her propensity to multi-task and maintain an overflowing schedule. Most of her outfits were not inspiring. I guess that makes sense since she is at this point in time a homemaker. After all, what sense does it make to were couture while flipping pancakes and scrubbing windows. The olive Grecian inspired draped dress she wore to pick her son up from school was lovely although an overly glamorous choice for an after school pickup. I was relieved that although she lost her job most importantly she did not lose her fashion sense.

Victory on the other hand did not want for fashion options. Yet, while her character did not have any earth shattering emotional discoveries, with the way things ended with Rodrigo I am beginning to wonder if that is where she is headed in the future. Rodrigo does not seem comfortable in her world of high fashion and glamour. And he is so against all the idea of excess to a point of the ridiculous...who passes up a free limo ride for the subway?! He seems to be looking for the way out. Will she let him? The true test might appear life after construction project...so we shall see then. Thankfully, Victory was less 80's glam and more 21st century polished. Loved the purple shirt with the puffed petaled shoulders and the modern flapper gray sweater look in her last scene.

We have finally seen enough of Rosie Perez to actually discuss her fashion contributions to the show. Like Nico, her character favors the tailored dress for work; however she spices up her choices to look less conservative. But what else is to be expected from a publicist! I was all for her fashion palettes - white dress with overstated gold links and black with multi-tiered gold necklace. Everything looked great until she wore the black dress with the pink trim and racy full length zipper down the back with - hold it - a bohemian inspired brown leather purse...who does that!? Whatever happened to a simple clutch or a black leather open top tote for a more professional look?

Stay tuned in the future we might see Vanessa Marcil of Las Vegas fame on the show soon. Well this is all I have to say about the show.

This time we find out via her bodyguard that Jennifer Aniston is into shopping at the Gap. We must send him a big "Thank you" shout out! Come to think of it her understated style seems like it could be off the rack except when she is on the red carpet. I can so see her getting her bathing suits from J. Crew, jeans in Nordstrom and of course corduroy jackets from the Gap. Even after these recent statement from Angelina Jolie her sense fashion has been constant and unchanging even when her taste in men and the rumors about her change with the season. I wonder if her sense of style will change soon too.

Last Cool Out ... The Search For Fun in DC

Hi Darlings:

Background: I had brunch with my friend S the other day. Like me, she is a fashionista and always in the know about the goings on in the city - well at least the events that interest us. However, during our fascinating discussion she still asked that pesky little question "Where do people go to hang out?" By that statement, I knew what she meant was - where can you go to hang out and meet like minded folks who are our age. (Aside: There is no way I am telling you guys how old I am.)

She is not the first friend to ask me this question. In the last few years, those of you who live in Washington, DC are probably amazed at the diversity of the social options currently available. There are many more lounges like Lima, Jin, Park, Zengo, and Station 9 to name a few. Each location has a different "scene" and in some cases a different clientele for each night. In hindsight, the benefit of in the past only having two or more really fun hang-outs was that you always knew what to expect and never had to worry about being surrounded by a fabulous crowd whenever you chose to go out. A purrfect situation for a single diva!

Now with so many more options, everyone complains because it is a little harder to figure out the right night to party or chill with friends at any location. For example, some friends and I randomly went to Andalu a few months ago and had a blast. A week a later we stopped by on the same night - empty. Random!

Reason: I am writing about hanging out woes in DC because of 1.) the confusion of where to go and also because 2.) a great summer party came to an end last night. Discussing these two situation ultimately leads to my philosophy on finding fun in the city. Okay so we already discussed the confusion (i.e. part I). Now, lets focus on the great summer party.

I think the key to finding fun in DC is being flexible, not getting tied to one place, and trying new avenues and events.

Take the following event for example. The Beacon Street hotel has been holding a Sunday "Cool Out" party every Sunday this summer. It's a function that has an artsy feel. Imagine a penthouse suite of a hotel with an open patio, a room with couches looking out on said patio, a mini fountain, a gazebo with a DJ spinning and a bar. Let's not leave out the beautiful people or more specifically the beautiful, artsy, fashion forward people with a departure from big box store wear and an independent expression of individual style. Inspiration. Mohawks. Funkiness. Loves it!

I was late in the know because like many people I ignored my emails. I would receive emails publicizing this function and not pay attention - I was not used to hanging out at the Beacon Street - until a friend or two clued me into this delightful event. For my part there were not many familiar faces but nonetheless it was a great event. I had tons of fun. The view was great! And for DC the people watching irreplicable!

From now on I am going to complain less and be more observant and open minded. The old same ole same ole way of finding fun is over.

Lipstick Jungle - Season 2, Episode 3

Hi Darlings:

I loved tonight's episode for two reasons. The first being the color purple and simplicity. The second being the plot twists. The storyline is coming into its own which thrills me SO we are going to discuss both the episode and the fashion choices together.

There was a lot of purple in tonight's episode. I was happy to see that because I believe purple is the color of the season whether you are on a budget or not. I am on a budget like many of you but I still recently purchased a purple purse. Not only was purple on display but so was simplicity. Let's now talk plot and style.
The episode started with Victory on a date with Rodrigo as they are interrupted by a phone call from Joe. She wore a red dress with a full skirt and plunging neckline - as in her tatas were bursting to be set free. Very date appropriate if you wanted to take it to the next level/base! Which reminded me of my Dad's saying "your clothes send a message to the guy you are with so dress appropriately" Dad was right! Well the message was not lost on contractor guy because he did not take the bait as he decided to head home to his 10-year old daughter Sandy.

The next day when confronted with Joe's new Russian designer "friend" she wore a green dress (envy) with purple print and purple purse, similar to the purse Wendy used in the last episode. Loved the body hugging dress and the simple gold hoop earrings and headband utilized as accessories. She broke up with Rodrigo - his idea - since he sensed something was up with her and Joe who was acting a bit on the immature side. She was wearing a purple princess cut. But when she wore the creamy purple brocade dress with the pearl-like bracelet they more than made up for lost time. I will add this making up happened after she spotted Joe at a lounge with the Russian and told him she was sooo over him. I don't think billionaires like being rejected. Hmmm...how will this effect the construction project and their relationship as business partners? He did not look happy in the end.

Wendy is typical of the do-gooder who just messes everything up trying to help everybody. Aside from learning from her that we should always moisturize before going to bed, we note that no matter how much we feel for your friends financial situation it should never amount to commiting fraud to help them! Yes Fraud... Who is helped if you have to go to jail? Noah - the friend with cancer that she forged the insurance papers for in secret - Died! The loss could not be recouped and she found out his family would have to pay - while wearing a royal purple shirt with a gold necklace and exquisite pencil skirt with individual buttons down the back - from her new boss. While wearing a gray knit dress, hair in a simple bun and simple earrings - she was fired! Seriously, I loved her "you're fired" outfit. If you have to go down and take the fall for lack of judgment - you might as well look fabulous. She did and we are so proud! What will she wear on her job search? Or maybe she will switch to simple chic as she becomes a stay at home mom.

Nico is dealing with the reality of no walls in the way of an open relationship with Kirby. She also has a little issue at work - new boss and protests against an editorial featuring demented chic - ie models in high fashion at a mental institute being lead around by orderlies. Hmmm...that's how the mag staff explained it. To defend herself at the meeting she wore her usual professional shell-like shirt but she also wore the black framed glasses and the simple pearl and gold necklace. The look was not intimidating enough...her new boss shut her down. She did have a red dress with a sewed on jeweled trim (great budget idea) but I loved the simple purple dress and the gold cuff she wore later in the episode when she shook things up. The cuff - sort of wonder woman like were appropriate as she took on her boss and dealt with her relationship with Kirby phobias. One thing we can probably expect next episode is that she will wear pearls and something white (she wore white jeans and a white dress in the episode) but it is refreshing when she adds a little more color like purple here and there as a constant alternative.

Oh yeah... Rosie Perez was back an causing trouble. She set up Victory on a blind date with random men from an online dating site. It seems she might've even registered Victory on one of those sites! Where have I heard this before. And that is all I have tonight.

80's Fashion Revival - Will it last? Do we want it to?

I once had to interview a boutique owner in DC for a freelance article I was working on and she mentioned that she shops globally but is inspired by the kids on the streets locally who have fashion daring tastes. She noted their wearing of brightly colored sneakers and bright leggings as well as new ways of wearing traditional fashion staples as fantastic examples of fashion innovation. Hmmm.... maybe that's where Rihanna, Teyana Taylor, Tokyo Diiva and Solange Knowles get their fashion inspiration as well. Watching Teyana Taylor on MTv's My Sweet Sixteen it was clear she did not grow up on or near the streets. And we all know about Solange and the other Knowles and likewise, with Rihanna the Bahamian beaches do not scream NY streets!
Or maybe its the other way around... According to Tokyo Diiva the streets influence her style.Either way, how do we explain the "Bad" or "Bad Gurl" rings? Does this mean that flat tops and hammer pants are next? Will they be around for a season like high waisted pants or are they here for another decade? Or is this just symbolic of the moment in time when acrylic nails made the turn from ghetto to fab? So will Christina Aguilera and Madonna soon start wearing them?

Come to think about it, it seems like baggy jeans with cuffed hems and jeans with holes have been seen on quite a few celebs lately.

Another set of 80's trends that are making a not so subtle comeback. Frankly, I am just now getting the hang of skinny jeans, so don't really think I am inclined to switch anytime soon.

The memories of the first baggy jeans trend in the 80's aren't too pleasant. But I've never met a bubble dress I did not like!

Lipstick Jungle - Season 2, Episode 2

Hi Darlings:

Okay so the plot thickens with Lipstick Jungle and we are getting more interested but it hasn't gotten to the "crap! I just chewed off my nails thinking about this episode" moment. I will discuss the juicy tidbits in a minute but first the most important stuff.

In this the White Dresses and Color Mix Episode (I know cheesy) we see a lot to be fascinated with especially for those of you who are loathe to wear white after Labor Day - old-fashioned or fear the mixture of random color pallets - silly. Even Nico got into the color game and moved away from her usual black when she wore a white and baby-blue dress at the clothing swap party - ok that scene was gross!

What do I think about the white dresses? Well, frankly Divas, I was surprised there were so many but glad they were not over done. Wendy's dress has some metallic weight - sorry no pic - with the gold buckle while Victory's dress was simple with the sweatheart style bust and the lovely, huge turquoise and gold Indian inspired necklace. (see above)

I think white is okay after Labor Day but it must be balanced. You can't just wear a white dress without a white shoe or white purse or wear it with a brown belt and brown shoe or black belt and black shoe. A white outfit needs some other white item to work. Even if that white item is a white necklace.

As for the color mixes, as long as they are in the same color pallet you should be able to mix. This is the fun part of dressing up. Wendy stuck with close colors - pale green necklace with pale green dress and red necklace with red dress but as usual Victory's choices were more daring. She had the pink skirt, passion fruit belt and reddish-shoes - and the work...well except for the big, red, black and furry purse! Yuck! She also mixed the brown soft leather jacket with the mixed color and black gems, the white leather jewelry and jeans with black purse. All earthy and all workable together in the casual sense.

As for the plot...it seems like this was the playing with fire episode. Nico is trying to revisit her youth by going to random rave type, I will switch my clothes with strangers parties...yup ...you heard correctly! Thank goodness she still goes to work! Well she found her heart and hooked up her husband's college-aged, baby mamma's child with a trust fund and hopefully that chapter is closed. Wendy forged a doctor's signature for Noah the lead actor/her friend on her current film. He is dying and could die in the middle of the shoot...where would that leave her. Probably out of a job. Victory is testing the romantic waters with her new contractor in front of Joe...wonder how jealousy will rare its ugly head. Stay tuned...

Deep breath! I loved the premiere episode for the same reason I have always tuned into Lipstick Jungle - the fashion is on point! It's a great show that showcases amazing looks and accessory trends however plot-wise I am always expecting the storyline to keep me awake until the next episode and sometimes that does not happen. After watching Episode 1 - I am hopeful that this season will be fantastic!

I call this episode the Shift and Necklace episode. The outfits were like the clash of the titans - strong fabrics and cuts- mostly seen on Nico and Wendy an eventually on Victory - combined with feminine treats that I love, like brooches, multi-stranded necklaces, floral oversided rings and shoes with gems/crystals! Loved it all. Nico's outfits were amazing and the multi-stranded gold and gem pieces were GREAT.

At the funny funeral - I loved the way they all did the black and white looks. I feel like I should run in my closet and start putting jewelry together. The simple canvas of the shift dress is an amazing medium to showcase jewelry!

As for the plot...the excitement for me begins and ends with Nico's story. The deceased husband's three year relationship with the pregnant student and the plotting to sue her for divorce under the guise of abandonment. College professors have too much time on their hands! And the botox in the "you know where" - I guess it is the magic drug. I wonder if her cab ride leads to Kirby!

As for Wendy and Victory. Victory, when are you just going to eventually get back with Joe. If I were her I would keep my eye on Dahlia (Rosie Perez) who loves shoving her decolletage in his face. Wendy's mom (Jane Fonda) brings to light her conflict of work and family. Hopefully she will choose balance and not lean more towards one or the other. You can have what you want it just depends on the why, how and whens!!!

What a past week I've had...allergies are no fun especially when they come with complications! Well I finally feel better. The one vision that stands out in my memory from last week were pics of Sarah Jessica Parker in booties. She even makes a highly questioned fashion choice by Katie Holmes look great! How Carrie-esque of her! Or maybe we are just getting used to the idea that at least for now baggy jeans are coming back in style! I think ankle booties are so diva-divine that I had one of the characters in my new blog A Diva Would Never wear them with a dress.

Who would've thought this day would ever come...Naomi sharing the catwalk. Hi Darlings:

I love crop jackets! As a matter of fact they are one of my favorite items of clothing because of the versatilility. If a dress is showing too much cleavage the addition of the crop jacket resolves that issue in a minute. They dress up a pair of jeans and t-shirt and crop jackets are perfect for the beginning of Fall. Personally I like them because of the chic factor and diva-divine value they add to an outfit. Every closet needs one or two. I believe everyone has a right to wear what they want but I was a little thrown off by the picture below. What do you think?

Eva Longoria ... Did they call her FAT?

Hi Darlings:

Yesterday, I decided to step into the gym after being MIA for a little over a week. I was eating too much of what I should not and I just felt it was time. My proverbial chi was off because working out keeps me spiritually and physically balanced. Needless to say, I feel much better after my all cardio session so guess who is heading to the gym again today. However, I could tell that I had gained a pound or too (blame the delicious raisin bread from the farmer's market) but thankfully my friends did not go around calling me fat...well at least not to my face. Hmmmm.

But, can you imagine that Eva Longoria's friends think she is FAT and using that as an excuse to give the press for why they are wrong in considering her pregnant because she has supposedly gained some weight. First of all, that is so irresponsible of a statement to make when there are so many fragile young girls out there who look up to her as an image role model. What are they going to now think about themselves? Because even I look at the picture above and can't tell where she is storing the fat. Maybe that's something she can get trademarked and sell for tons of cash because its amazing how well it's hidden.

I remember when I wore a plaid uniform in high school I did not consider anything about that gray, red, green and blue striped outfit to be fashionable. It was utilitarian but not a social standout and in those days did not make me a trendsetter. However, I recently saw a CBS Sunday Morning commentary featuring authors and fashionistas, Jeffrey Bank and Doria de la Chappelle about their book Tartan: Romancing the Plaid. The commentary accompanying the interview stated that plaid was the fabric of the season. Hearing this I began to think that a perplexing fashion invasion was on the horizon. Now I think you remember my mentioning last year that plaid, especially used in winter coats was making a fashion comeback. But, I thought for sure the plaid fabrics would go the way of high-waisted pants and be a flash in the pan, once in a generation style experiment. According to the "experts" I am wrong. Surprisingly, this fabric is considered a choice of comfort like hamburgers and fries when you are sad or baked macaroni n cheese on a cold day. How fascinating! Well you never know what will become en vogue tomorrow. It makes giving away lightly worns all the more difficult.

I just finished watching Hillary Clinton speak at the DNC convention. What an amazing speech! Loved the orange suit and I am sure the "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pantsuits" did to. I would like to talk about the speech but this site is not about politics - we are all about and all for fashion!

So, on that note I must say convention fashion comes in the form of the quirkiest hats I have seen in a while. It seems like creativity runs wild and surfaces in the oddest ways. For Hillary it might be about the pant suits but for the attendees the hats are where its at. I guess that goes to show that you can express your views and political leanings in many varied ways. In this blog, I've created an e-drama based on the lives of three women living in Washington, DC. Diane, one of the characters narrates the story about her life in DC and her experiences with her two friends Cindi and Jaz. They are fashionable, out-going professional women who face many challenges each day but in the end they will always be friends…hopefully. What you have to ask yourself is whether the episodes are real life or fiction. The District can be a lot more interesting than you think. So, don’t believe the rumors… there is more to life in the District than politics, suits and power lunches.

Olympics - Confidence Strongest Fashion Statement

Hi Darlings:

I was watching the Olympics on and off while out-of-town resting and I could not help but notice that the athletes had one accessory we should all own - self-confidence. Without it they couldn't win and we can't succeed.

Yes, Usain Bolt was criticised for being cocky. But I believe that one man's cocky is another man's confident. I was just in the Caribbean and he is a hero to natives of all the islands whether or not they are Jamaican. For a group of people who infrequently have such role models who are spotlighted internationally, he is a hero and his show of confidence after bolting across the finish line - so to speak - part of a culture of people who are naturally expressive. His confidence is inspiring.

On a different note self-confidence also allowed the American gymnasts too prevail despite the odds against them.

For many the Olympics are over and so is the televised inspiration of watching the athletes achieve their dreams. The reality is that you don't have to wait another 4 years to be inspired to be your best. We all have it within in us to be self-inspiring. I always hope everyone can aspire to follow their dreams with confidence.

Olympics Fashion...

I love the olympics! Like everything else sports related I am definitely the bandwagon girl...but I am quick to catch up! I caught the gymnastics competition today and watched them flip, vault and twirl on the edge of my seat. I also saw Michael Phelps and the other swimmers in the relay win the gold! Hmmm...he is such a cutey...le sigh.
